Greek Ceramic Amphora for Goddess Artemis and God Apollo
The amphora, a two-handled pot with a neck narrower than the body, is an ancient vessel form that was widely used in Greek pottery as a storage jar and one of the principal vessel shapes. Amphorae, which have survived in great numbers, were utilized as storage and transport vessels for a variety of goods, including olives, cereals, oil, and wine. In outsize form, they were also used for funerals and as grave markers. Wide-mouthed, painted amphorae were employed as decanters and were given as prizes.
One of the styles of painting on antique Greek vases is the black-figure pottery painting, also known as the black-figure style or black-figure ceramic. This style was particularly prevalent between the 7th and 5th centuries BC, although there are specimens dating as late as the 2nd century BC.
